Why I drink lemon water every morning...

Every morning, without fail, I drink over a pint of lukewarm water with a whole freshly squeezed lemon in it! We don't have a lemon tree, and they can get expensive in the wrong season, but I make sure I collect a good supply every time I come across a tree...I think my friends are tired of me raiding theirs! And yes the sour taste takes a while to get used to, but the great effects it is having on your body makes it all so worthwhile! more

The most significant and obvious benefit comes from the water itself and its temperature. It's not rocket science to think that you have spent the last eight hours in bed, without generally consuming any liquid, so the first thing you should do in the morning is to give back to your body. Therefore just drinking a large glass of water is going to re-hydrate you. The body temperature of the water allows you body to absorb the water into your system a lot faster, as it doesn't have to either cool down or warm up the liquid. The water will flush your digestive system and give your mind and body a wake-up call.

The most detrimental thing you could be doing to your body after you first wake up is dehydrating yourself further with caffeine. By having a glass of lemon water first thing instead, you are allowing your body to wake up naturally and feel refreshed from a liquid that you actually need.

Now by adding lemon to that morning intake of water, you will be gaining about 30-40mg of Vitamin C. This will help your skin, improve your immune system and is a great antioxidant. Vitamin C makes its way through your body, neutralizing any free radicals (unstable molecules) it finds and prevents any damage they cause to your body.

Lemon water also acts as a mini detox every morning, as it ensures the liver's efficiency. The liver is key in the body's natural filtration and metabolism and is constantly working to neutralize toxins.
